A Privilege and a Call to Action: Speaking at the Local Conference of Youth (LCOY) Malawi

The Clean cities project team had the great honor of being invited to speak at this year’s Local Conference of Youth (LCOY) Malawi, hosted by the Embassy of the Kingdom of Morocco in Malawi and organized under YOUNGO, the official youth constituency of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). This was an incredible opportunity to engage with passionate young leaders and share insights on how the Clean Cities Project is contributing to the global movement for climate action and environmental sustainability.

At the event, the team was privileged to highlight the strides our team is making in combating climate change, particularly through our waste management and recycling initiatives. The Clean Cities Project has been actively transforming plastic and paper waste into creative, sustainable products, all while empowering local communities and creating green jobs. Our work not only addresses waste pollution but also plays a crucial role in educating and engaging the next generation in sustainable practices.

What made this event truly special was the energy and enthusiasm of the young people in the room. It was inspiring to connect with such brilliant minds who are deeply invested in shaping a more sustainable future. Together, we discussed challenges, shared ideas, and most importantly, collaborated on creating actionable solutions that can make a difference — both locally and globally. One of the most exciting outcomes of our discussions was the development of recommendations that will be presented at COP29 in Azerbaijan this December. These recommendations will serve as a youth-led call to action, bringing forward the voices of young people who are committed to climate action and environmental justice.

As we all know, climate change is not just a distant issue — it’s a reality that affects us today. Rising temperatures, extreme weather events, and environmental degradation are impacting communities all over the world, and it’s our responsibility to take action. The urgency of the situation cannot be overstated. We can no longer afford to be passive observers; now is the time to act.

This experience reinforced our belief that youth are at the forefront of the climate movement. We have the energy, creativity, and determination to make real change. Whether it’s through advocacy, innovation, or community engagement, young people are showing up and making their voices heard. And we must keep pushing forward.

To all the young people out there — it’s time to get involved. Together, we can tackle the climate crisis and build a sustainable future for ourselves and future generations. The world is waiting for our leadership. Let’s rise to the challenge, share our ideas, and keep the momentum going.
